Clinical services of the Stanford Radiology 3D and Quantitative Imaging Laboratory include 3DQ rendering of CT and MR images, as well as quantitation of anatomical structures and pathology, and diseases burden, to aid in diagnosis, presurgical planning and treatment monitoring.

Rendering techniques include curved planar, oblique, and multiplanar reconstruction; average, maximum and minimum intensity projections; virtual endoscopy; and volume rendering. Real-time assessment of anatomical structures in motion is achieved with 4D temporal rendering.

All CT and MRI angiograms include 3DQ post-processing. If you will need a 3DQ examination along with a routine CT or MRI examination, you must also order the 3DQ examination as well.

Clinicians are welcome to come to the 3DQ Laboratory or Radiology reading rooms to interact with CT or MRI data with the Radiologists and 3DQ Technologists.

3D images may be viewed as separate series within your patient’s CT or MRI study on PACS.

Your 3DQ images aid your physicians in the diagnosis and display of anatomy and any pathology that is demonstrated on your CT or MRI examination. Your physician may utilize these images when planning any surgical interventions.

3DQ Management Software

3d_managementThe 3DQ Lab has implemented a custom workflow management software to track, manage and quality-control day -to-day clinical and research operations. The software allows technologists to select, coordinate, process and report studies in real time. The system has three main components – a clinical workflow management module, a measurements database and custom research workflow management modules that are developed for each large research project undertaken by the lab. The core software is hosted on a rack mount server, with backup on separate storage server and a standalone server.

Daily 3DQ Workflow

3d_management_02A web-based secure application is seamlessly integrated with the Centricity RIS-IC radiology information system. The application allows selection of studies appropriate for 3DQ Processing, and allows technologist assignment, scheduling, billing and monthly/yearly reporting of 3DQ Lab outputs and efficiency. The 3DQ Lab is currently split between two physical locations, and the system allows efficient coordination, troubleshooting and work completion while reducing phone calls and sneaker trips. Clients in the radiology reading rooms also access the system to exchange instructions and prioritize studies for processing. The application was initially developed using ASP with an MS Access backend and is currently being redeveloped in with a SQL server backend.

Quantitative Measurement Database

3d_management_03Initially, quantitative 3DQ data created by our technologists was reported using templates that were not collected into a central database. We designed an implemented a system that instead stores measurements in a central database in a generic format that allows customized reports to be produced for specific internal and external clients for both research and clinical use. On the other hand, the raw data is still available for data mining and research applications. Use of a large industrial strength SQL server database with regular backups ensures that the data we collect for our research clients is safe and secure.

3d_management_04The software allows custom measurement protocols to be implemented for specific research protocols, making both data collection and quality control easier. The system also allows for automated comparisons and graphs showing the change in 3DQ measurements over time for each patient or study subject, streamlining patient care management for the referring physician.
