Case of the Month, Head and Neck

Nine year old male with a clinical history of microtia (congenital deformity where the external ear is underdeveloped) and atresia of the external auditory canal (developmental absence of the external auditory canal) was assessed for potential atresia reconstruction. Findings of the left temporal bone indicate atresia of the external auditory, middle ear cavity is small and opacified, and the middle ear ossicles are absent. There is also hypoplasia of the left mandibular body, ramus, condyle, and coronoid process. These 3D volume rendered models produced by one of our technologists clearly demonstrates the asymmetry of the left facial soft tissues and bony abnormalities. Producing these images requires advanced software and our lab’s skilled technologists.
