Abdomen and Pelvis, Case of the Month

62 year old male presenting with progressive weight loss and abdominal pain when exercising. CT scan with IV contrast shows no clear origin of the superior mesenteric artery or celiac artery, but rather a single celiomesenteric trunk with an occluded ostium. The celiomesenteric trunk is instead supplied by the inferior mesenteric artery via a tortuous Arc of Riolan. There are numerous other prominent collaterals throughout the abdomen as a result of the occlusion. Also seen is a segment of highly calcified aortic stenosis. These 3D volume rendered models produced by one of our technologists clearly illustrates these vascular abnormalities for the patient and his doctors. Producing these images requires advanced software and our lab’s skilled technologists.
