Abdomen and Pelvis, Case of the Month

A 77 year-old Male requires evaluation of venous system for possible removal of an IVC (Inferior Vena Cava) filter (labeled in Movie A), which had been put in place to prevent blood clots from reaching the heart. Images also show a filling defect (possible clot) extending from the level of the IVC filter into the right common iliac vein.

The Stanford 3DQ Lab uses thin slab Maximum Intensity Projection in combination with Curved Planar Reconstruction to visualize the IVC filter in relation to surrounding structures (Movie B). This visualization requires specialized software and imaging specialists that know optimal viewing techniques and projections. This visualization was created on TeraRecon Aquarius iNtuition client. This high-quality CT venogram abdomen and pelvis is a result of clear protocols and careful scanning from Stanford Health Care’s CT Technologists and Radiologists.
