DICOM CVS Reports

Patients with certain aortic conditions such as dissection or aneurysm often get routine imaging examinations over time. The 3DQ Lab performs measurements on each of the examinations to help surgeons evaluate the size and rate of change of the aorta. These Aortic Surveillance reports have been delivered as PDF files, generated on-demand from a custom web application. Learn more about the aortic surveillance program here.

While that PDF report in itself is a significant accomplishment, no permanent storage of these reports have been sent into the medical record. To address this, 3DQ lab developers identified pathways to share this report more broadly.

The 3DQ Lab developed a proof-of-concept process to convert Aortic Surveillance reports into DICOM format for storage within the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS). By leveraging patient and exam metadata already associated with imaging studies, reports could be automatically linked to the correct patient record and stored alongside other imaging data.

The workflow and supporting processes have been developed and validated but are not yet fully implemented as of mid-2026. Once deployed, the approach could reduce manual report distribution, free administrative time, and provide direct access to surveillance report information within existing imaging systems.
