3D Printing, Case of the Month, Chest

Printing 3D models improves communication between radiologists, technologists, surgeons and patients and their families by allowing for tactile interaction with the anatomy and increased understanding of the relationship between anatomical structures.

This 3D printed model (Image 2) was created using a Computed Tomography (CT) scan of a 30 year old patient with a compressed trachea due to a malformed ribcage. Image 1 demonstrates the degree of compression of the trachea in a computer-generated version of the model. The patient’s surgical team used the 3D model in conjunction with the original CT scan to determine the best course of treatment for this patient. The 3D model was created by a 3DQ Lab technologist using a suite of specialized 3D imaging and 3D modeling software.
