Cholelithiasis (Gallstones)
79 year old female presenting with right sided abdominal pain, cramping, nausea and vomiting.
Post-processing via 3D imaging software, was performed using images from her CT scan for better visualization of her abdomen.
This revealed numerous Gallstones (Cholelithiasis). These are hardened deposits of digestive fluids. They may vary in number and size, and may or may not cause symptoms. 80% of people with gallstones do not experience symptoms. Back pain, upper-right abdominal pain and indigestion are also symptoms of gallstones.
For patients exhibiting symptoms, treatment is usually Cholecystectomy, or gallbladder removal surgery. Gallstones that do not cause any symptoms usually do not need treatment. Treatment can include a low fat diet, medications to reduce cholesterol, and surgery.
