November 2016 – Living Related Renal Donor

Abdomen and Pelvis, Case of the Month

These images were created from an MRI scan of a potential living kidney donor.  The 3D technologist, using specialized software and thorough knowledge of the anatomy, carefully selected the kidneys and connecting structures from the scan data. A separate model was created for each portion of the anatomy, which was then color coded and displayed in 3D.

This type of imaging helps the surgeon determine if a kidney can be safely removed, and provides a “roadmap” for the surgery.  They are an essential part of the planning process for kidney donation, and help to enable a safer and less invasive surgery for the kidney donor.
